Beast is part of an ongoing series of kinetic sculptures that hybridise anatomy studies and construction methods present in industrial furniture fabrication, stop motion animation armatures and musical instruments. Beast takes the form of a large skeletal quadruped that plays sounds from the string instrument mechanisms with its chest cavity. The sound is made through multiple effect pedals to create dissipating low tones that are complemented by looped mechanical sounds from the motor Echoing through the steel body of beast. The hypnotic cadence of sound and the oscillating figure of the sculpture creates a disorienting encounter that disrupts the perception of time and that the viewer is in the presence of a mysterious creature.
